CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Cleanup crews have made a lot of progress in Chapel Hill after heavy downpours and strong winds led to flooding and downed trees Wednesday night.

On Thursday, the water had receded at the Booker Creek Townhouse apartments off Old Oxford Road, where water levels reached doors and went inside apartments overnight. Visible water lines on the doors of the apartments show just how high the water was during Wednesday's heavy rain.

Video shows the entire complex filled with floodwater as water rushes throughout parking lots. WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said between 2 to 3 inches of rain fell across Chapel Hill and Orange County, which was under a flash flood warning Wednesday night.

The video shows some cars submerged in the water and water levels getting above the wheels of other vehicles.

Cleanup began almost immediately. Crews worked overnight to clear debris and branches from a fallen tree so people would be able to enter and exit the neighborhood.

WRAL News is working to learn if anyone was displaced from the flooding.

The Town of Chapel Hill said flooding also occurred on major roads, including:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Estes Drive
  • Fordham Blvd. and Estes Drive Ext.
  • Fordham Blvd. and Ephesus Church Road
  • W. Franklin Street between Kenan Street and Mallette Street
