RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh woman injured five detention officers in the Wake County jail on Monday during an escape attempt, according to arrest warrants.

Shyann Althea Newsome, 21, hit one officer in the knee, severely pulled another's hair, stomped on a third's foot and hurt the wrists of two others, according to warrants. The altercation occurred at about 6 p.m. when she made a run for the jail's secured sally port while being escorted back to her cell, authorities said.

Newsome was charged with five counts of assault on a law enforcement officer causing serious injury and one count of attempted escape from a local jail.

She was initially arrested Friday on two counts of attempted assault with a deadly weapon after she was accused of threatening a man and a woman with a folding knife, according to an arrest warrant.

She now is being held in the Wake County jail under $62,000 bond.

The five female detention officers were treated for minor injuries at WakeMed.
