Five Wake detention officers hurt in scuffle with female inmate
A Raleigh woman injured five detention officers in the Wake County jail on Monday during an escape attempt, according to arrest warrants.
Posted — UpdatedShyann Althea Newsome, 21, hit one officer in the knee, severely pulled another's hair, stomped on a third's foot and hurt the wrists of two others, according to warrants. The altercation occurred at about 6 p.m. when she made a run for the jail's secured sally port while being escorted back to her cell, authorities said.
Newsome was charged with five counts of assault on a law enforcement officer causing serious injury and one count of attempted escape from a local jail.
She was initially arrested Friday on two counts of attempted assault with a deadly weapon after she was accused of threatening a man and a woman with a folding knife, according to an arrest warrant.
She now is being held in the Wake County jail under $62,000 bond.
The five female detention officers were treated for minor injuries at WakeMed.
