CARY, N.C. — State troopers said a taxi driver was lucky to come unscathed out of a five-vehicle, chain-reaction wreck on Interstate 40 West early Saturday.

An SUV taxi stopped in the right westbound lane of the interstate between Airport Boulevard and Aviation Parkway around 2:45 a.m., troopers said. The driver opened the door was about to step out when another vehicle rear-ended the taxi. The collision pushed the taxi forward as a third vehicle sideswiped it.

An oncoming SUV stopped to avoid hitting the taxi and was rear-ended by a fifth vehicle.

One person suffered minor injuries from broken glass and was taken to Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Three of four westbound lanes of I-40 were closed for about two hours after the wreck.
