LOUISBURG, N.C. — Five people were sent to the hospital after a two-vehicle crash shut down part of U.S. 401 near Louisburg Friday night.

Troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol said two cars were going south and one was going north. One car going south tried to pass the other and hit the car heading north head-on.

Four people were in the vehicle that was attempting to pass. They, along with the driver of the vehicle that was hit, were sent to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Troopers said the vehicle that was attempting to pass was doing so improperly. Charges were pending and the investigation continued into Saturday.

U.S. 401 was open again just before 11 p.m. Friday.
