GARNER, N.C. — Both directions of Interstate-40 were temporarily closed overnight while crews cleared a crash that sent five people to the hospital.

The crash occurred before 1 a.m. near the U.S. Highway 70 Bypass and Exit 309.

A car traveling in the westbound lanes crossed the median and struck an SUV in the eastbound lanes, according to officials at the scene. A total of three vehicles were involved, but the specifics of the crash are under investigation.

Authorities said five people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. I-40 reopened by 3 a.m.

Charges are pending, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
