WENDELL, N.C. — Three adults and two children were injured Thursday morning in a wreck in Johnston County, according to the state Highway Patrol.

A 1995 Ford van was eastbound on Lake Wendell Road shortly after 8 a.m. when one of the tires blew out, Trooper J.L. Thorpe said. The van went off the right side of the road, hit a ditch and overturned, he said.

Four adults and four children were in the van, and three adults, a 12-year-old boy and and an 8-year-old girl were taken to WakeMed for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Thorpe said.

Monique Atkinson, 28, of 130-B Halton Lane in Selma, was charged with driving with a revoked license, having unsafe tires, a child restraint violations and two counts each of felony child abuse and misdemeanor child abuse. She was being held Thursday in the Johnston County jail under a $55,000 bond.

Atkinson was the mother of all four children, none of whom was properly restrained in the van, Thorpe said.
