RALEIGH, N.C. — A woman was safe on dry land Saturday evening after fire crews had to rescue her when floodwaters trapped her in her vehicle.

Family members said a 33-year-old woman was driving home from a dialysis center near Gideon Creek Way and Durham Drive when water started rushing up around her.

Video from the scene shows the woman sitting on top of her car while fire officials rescued her with a ladder.

Raleigh fire officials said they were responding to a separate call when they saw the woman sitting on top of the car and called water crews to rescue her.

Crews set up the ladder on a grassy area, stretched it to the car and were able to get her home safely.

“He said she’s doing OK. I’ve never seen anything like that,” said the woman’s mother-in-law, Pam Varney.

Employees who work at the nearby Salvation Army said the spot is known for flooding when there is a lot of rain.
