CARRBORO, N.C. — A major apartment fire in Poplar Place Apartments in Carrboro ended with only three injuries – including a small dog and her owner, who was hospitalized.

Flames could be seen through the roof, and damaged around 20 units within the apartment building, displacing multiple families. The fire started during a particularly dangerous time – early Monday morning, when many people were still asleep in their beds.

Carrboro Fire Chief Dave Schmidt said he's amazed everyone made it out with no serious injuries.

Officials said one person was able to be treated on-site, but a small dog's owner was sent to a hospital for their injuries.

A small dog was placed on oxygen.

The little black Chihuahua named Luna was also injured in the fire – passing out from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters found her in an apartment unconscious from breathing in smoke. They had an oxygen mask specially fitted for pets, put it on Luna and revived her.

Schmidt said the oxygen mask saved Luna's life.

A small dog passed out from smoke inhalation, but was given oxygen by firefighters and revived.

"She had a close call, but now she's fine, and she's super cuddly," her caretaker said. "I'm carrying her around and loving on her."

Schmidt said most paramedics and fire departments now have small masks for pets, since animals are considered part of the family.

"Within a little bit the dog was actually up and walking around, and you'd never know that dog was unconscious on the ground," Schmidt said.

Luna is at a friend's home and doing well. Her owner is still at the hospital – as a precaution.

The fire is out, but all 20 apartments in this building are damaged and uninhabitable.
