DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham firefighter was taken to the hospital after fighting a fire late Tuesday night.

After 11 p.m., the Durham Fire Department responded to a home in the 1500 block of Ruffin Street.

There were smoke and flames in the rear of the one-story, wood-framed home when crews arrived. Seventeen units and 39 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes.

The home suffered significant heat and smoke damage, and one resident was forced to leave. The Red Cross is assisting him with shelter, firefighters said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be assessed for a medical condition. The firefighter was stable.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
