Firefighter killed in Asheville blaze

Officials say one firefighter was killed and eight injured following a blaze in a medical office building in Asheville on Thursday.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Officials say one firefighter was killed and eight injured in a blaze in a medical office building in Asheville on Thursday. 

Asheville's Mission Hospital spokeswoman Merrell Gregory said the fire occurred at 445 Biltmore Ave. The hospital activated a command center and a triage unit to deal with the incident. About 200 people in the building made it out safely.

Capt. Jeffrey Bowen, 37, died in the blaze. He was a 13-year veteran with the Asheville Fire Department,

Seven firefighters remain in the hospital, including one who was sent to a burn center in Georgia. 

There is no word on what caused the fire.
