Eighteen sailors were hospitalized after an explosion erupted during a roaring blaze aboard a military assault ship at Naval Base San Diego Sunday morning, according to Naval Surface Forces.

The fire spread throughout the USS Bonhomme Richard, an amphibious assault ship home-ported in San Diego.

Federal fire officials are on scene along with the San Diego fire department, battling the three-alarm blaze.

Fire officials say sailors are being treated for injuries. There is no word on how many injuries there were or how serious the injuries are.

Investigators are still working to figure out how the fire started.
