A fireball was seen over the North Carolina coast Friday night around 7:40 p.m.

A fireball is another term for a very bright meteor, according to the American Meteor Society.

At least 5 fireballs were seen over the United States Friday night, and 80 eyewitnesses saw the meteor that skimmed the coast.

NASA Meteor Watch posted on Facebook that the fireball became visible 48 miles above the ocean off Camp Lejeune. It moved northeast at 32,000 miles per hour and disintegrated 28 miles above Morehead City.

The American Meteor Society shared videos people captured of the event.
