FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville firefighters said the drought has forced them to use unusual methods to fight a fire near a shopping center.

A wood fire near the Food Lion shopping center in the 4100 block of Raeford Road has burned since Monday and consumed 5 acres.

Fire officials, though, said the blaze has been under control the entire time. Crews plowed up debris to contain and extinguish the blaze.

"The method is a conservative way to stop the fire without using water during a drought that the City has taken precautions for," Battalion Commander Christina Morley of the Fayetteville Fire Department said in a release.

Morley said some people may smell stumps burning, but they should not worry.

The North Carolina Forestry Service has assisted in firefighting efforts. Fayetteville has rotated companies in and out to check on the burn.
