CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — An Orange County family escaped from a fire that destroyed their house west of Chapel Hill early Sunday, authorities said.

Smoke alarms in the house at 808 Solitude Point Road woke the family up around 1:15 a.m., Carrboro firefighters said. They managed to call 911 and get out of the house safely.

Crews from the White Cross, Carrboro, Orange Grove and Eli Whitney fire departments helped fight the blaze. At one point, it spread to nearby woods but was contained.

Firefighters stayed at the scene to put out hot spots through late Sunday morning.

Firefighters said the 5,000-square-foot home in a neighborhood off Old Greensboro Road was a total loss.

The displaced family is staying with friends.
