SMITHFIELD, N.C. — An early morning fire Thursday did significant damage to a home in Smithfield, fire officials said.

Smithfield Fire Chief Patrick Harris said that flames were shooting through the roof of the home at 411 S. Third St. when firefighters arrived around 2:30 a.m.

Smoke detectors alerted the home's residents, and they managed to get out safely, Harris said.

Firefighters from Smithfield, Selma and Four Oaks brought the blaze under control and were putting out hot spots three hours later.

Harris said the cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but investigators don't believe it's suspicious.

The home's residents are staying with family members. The home was built in the 1960s.
