GARNER, N.C. — Fire broke out in a Garner apartment building early Sunday, sending two people to the hospital for smoke inhalation, authorities said.

About 20 people evacuated Westchester Apartments, at 905 7th Ave., around 3:40 a.m., but the fire was contained to one unit.

The cause of the blaze is still being investigated, but authorities said it appears to be a cooking fire. Firefighters brought the flames under control within 15 minutes.

Authorities did not release the names or conditions of the two people who suffered smoke inhalation. Both were taken to WakeMed.
