Fire diverts traffic on Raleigh's New Bern Avenue

New Bern Avenue east of downtown Raleigh was closed for a couple of hours Saturday morning while firefighters battled a blaze at a convenience store and gas station.

RALEIGH, N.C. — New Bern Avenue east of downtown Raleigh was closed for a couple of hours Saturday morning while firefighters battled a blaze at a convenience store and gas station.

The fire was reported at 2120 New Bern Ave. just before 10:30 a.m. 

The fire began inside the store's office, according to an employee who did not wish to give his name. The man said he smelled something, opened the office door and was knocked back by flames. 

The man was alone in the store at the time. Aside from a bump on the head, he was not injured.
