RALEIGH, N.C. — Even working at home, many people regularly use travel cups.

Consumer Reports recently checked out several brands, including Yeti, Thermos and Starbucks.

“A travel mug seems like it would be a really simple thing, but a lot of people have a surprisingly tough time finding one that’s perfect,” said Paul Hope, with Consumer Reports.

First, the cup needs to keep beverages at the right temperature, so Consumer Reports ran several time-controlled tests.

“We also looked at how easy each mug was to clean, whether it fit into a variety of cup holders and whether you can open the lid with one hand, which is crucial when you’re taking a sip of coffee while you’re driving,” Hope said.

If temperature tops your list, Consumer Reports says go for the 16-ounce Zojirushi, which kept drinks hot for 13½ hours.

It’s easy to open, is leak-proof, fits into most cup holders and its lid comes apart, making it easier to clean than similarly designed mugs.

For a little less money, the Thermos Stainless King kept coffee hot for about seven hours. It also has a handy hook for a tea bag.

If easy clean-up is key, testers liked the 16-ounce Ello Campy cup for $18. It’s also leak-proof.

Another feature worth paying attention to is whether a mug is dishwasher safe. Some aren’t, so consumers need to check the label.
