RALEIGH, N.C. — A convicted felon was arrested Saturday after allegedly leaving his young child alone in a car with a loaded gun.

According to the arrest warrant, James Crawford Lane III, 30, of 6409 U.S. 15-501 in Pittsboro, left a handgun unsecured on the front seat. His daughter was in a car seat in the backseat, the warrant says. The incident happened in Wake County.

Lane was charged with child abuse and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He was being held in the Wake County Jail Monday under a nearly $1.3 million bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday afternoon.

According to state Department of Correction records, Lane was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit in Chatham County in 1998. In 2005, he was convicted of convicted of defying a court order that banned him from purchasing firearms.

DOC records show that Lane is on probation stemming from convictions for possession of drugs with intent to sell and speeding to elude arrest.
