Federal prison inmate in Butner who tested positive for COVID-19 dies

John Marrone, 85, died Saturday after he was hospitalized for shortness of breath, hypoxia and possible pneumonia. He tested positive for COVID-19 on May 30 and had long-term pre-existing medical conditions.

BUTNER, N.C. — An 85-year-old inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner died Saturday after testing positive for COVID-19 two weeks earlier.

John Marrone died after he was hospitalized for shortness of breath, hypoxia and possible pneumonia. He tested positive for COVID-19 on May 30 and had long-term pre-existing medical conditions.

Marrone was serving a 37-month sentence for gun and racketeering charges and had been in custody in Butner since January 2018.
