Federal agents find more than 23 pounds of cocaine in wheelchair at NC airport

Border patrol agents at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport seized more than 23 pounds of cocaine hidden inside an electric wheelchair.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Border protection agents at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport seized more than 23 pounds of cocaine hidden inside an electric wheelchair.

Alexander Lopez-Morel, 22, crossed into the U.S. from the Dominican Republic legally with an electric wheelchair, according to federal authorities. He was searched by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents when he came to Charlotte.

Authorities found packages within the seat cushions that tested positive for cocaine, federal officials said in a news release. The amount had an estimated street value of $378,000.

Lopez-Morel was charged with felony trafficking cocaine.
