FBI investigating DMV eavesdropping allegations

Investigators are looking into allegations that wiretapping technology was in place while George Tatum was DMV commissioner from 2003 to 2007, officials said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The FBI is investigating allegations of illegal wiretapping at the state Division of Motor Vehicles, officials said Friday.

Investigators are looking into allegations that wiretapping technology was in place while George Tatum was DMV commissioner from 2003 to 2007, officials said. Agents want to know whether DMV managers eavesdropped on employees' phone conversations.

Tatum couldn't be reached Friday for comment.
