The FBI on Friday announced rewards of up to $25,000 for tips that lead to arrests in the two attacks on the North Carolina power grid in recent months.

On Dec. 3, someone shot up two electrical substations in Moore county, leaving 40,000 homes and businesses in the dark for days.

The county, state and Duke Energy have already offered a $75,000 reward for tips in that attack. The additional FBI reward takes that total to $100,000 available to anyone who can provide information that leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible. Anyone with information should call the Moore County Sheriff’s Office at 910-947-4444, or contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL FBI or tips.fbi.gov.

Officials have filed search warrants in the investigation, but those documents have not been made public, so it's not clear who or what is being searched.

Raleigh-based lawyer Christian Dysart, who represents a client charged with destruction of an energy facility, points out that the attack in Moore County is a federal crime that could lead to decades in prison upon conviction. Dysart said depending on the motivations and people involved, the attack could be treated as an act of terrorism.

On Jan. 17, according to the FBI, someone fired multiple gunshots at an EnergyUnited substation located in Thomasville, N.C.

The FBI Charlotte field office is offering $25,000 for tips in that attack as well.
