FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A celebration was held for Fayetteville veterans and their families as the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic provided service for the 500th time.

The clinic provides mental health services for anyone who served in the United States Armed Forces, as well as their family members.

The focus is on helping service members deal with the invisible wounds of war, including PTSD, depression and substance abuse.

Kyle White knows all about the horrors of war. He received a Medal of Honor for his actions after he saved the life of a Marine in Afghanistan. He not only goes around the country promoting the Cohen Clinics, he also used one to help deal with his PTSD.

“I know the struggles we face as a population, a veteran population as well, as how tough it is to make that initial step forward and say, ‘Hey, something’s wrong. I need some help,’” White said.

The facility is a short-term care treatment center, but if more extensive treatment is needed, they can point individuals in the right direction.

On Thursday, the facility was celebrating more than just being open for a year and helping 500 clients.

“We’ve actually made 900 referrals and [offer] case management services where people come in if they need help getting some family situation resolved; power bills phone bills, we don’t actually pay those for them, but we do get them hooked up with the right services,” said John Bigger with the clinic.

One of the best things about the clinic is that it provides low-cost care to veterans and their families and, in many cases, services are free.

There are currently 10 similar clinics across the country and a new one is expected to open next week in Clarksville, Tenn.

It costs about $1 million per year to operate each clinic and Cohen put up is own personal money with plans to open 25 within three years.
