FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville will hold a national search for a new city manager after City Manager Ted Voorhees resigned from the position Monday night.

City officials said that Doug Hewett was appointed as interim city manager, effective at noon Tuesday, during a closed session of the Fayetteville City Council Monday night.

Hewett previously served as Fayetteville's assistant city manager until leaving the city in January 2012. He is currently the interim permitting and inspections director and previously served as city manager in Hollywood, Fla., and as assistant city manager in Winchester, Va.

Fayetteville officials said the City Council will likely establish a subcommittee to administer the search.
