FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A student shot nine times on the campus of Fayetteville State University last month was released Thursday night from a local hospital and was then arrested by Fayetteville police.

Levonte Carter, 20, of Raleigh, was in court Friday for an initial appearance, where he heard the charges that have been filed against him, including having a firearm on educational property and possession with intent to sell cocaine.

Cumberland County District Court Judge David Hasty set an unsecured bond of $25,000, largely because of Carter’s medical condition as he recovers from being shot several times. He was ordered to return to court on Oct. 23.

Carter was able to go home after spending the past 19 days in the hospital.

During his court appearance, he was helped into the courtroom by his father. His mother posted video of his recovery on her social media page.

Investigators say Carter was shot on campus by Codondrea Purdie and Rayshawan Vredenburg on Sept. 16. Both men remain locked up at the Cumberland County Jail, each with a bond of over $1 million.

Carter was allowed to leave court after he told the judge he planned to hire an attorney.

He declined to speak on camera to WRAL News and hid his face as his father guided him to their vehicle outside the court.

But his mother had plenty to say.

"I also want the media to get their facts straight because the stories keep changing," she said.

When asked by a WRAL News reporter what the story is, she said, "I don't know the truth. But how can you have . . . how can my son pull a gun out fire and then shoot first. It doesn't make sense to me."
