FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville State University Chancellor James Anderson is stepping down from his position after 11 years for personal reasons, university officials announced Thursday.

No date of his departure was mentioned in the news release announcing the move.

University of North Carolina Interim President Dr. Bill Roper will name an interim chancellor for the campus in the coming days to lead the school while a national search is conducted for a new chancellor.

During Anderson's tenure at FSU, academic standards, enrollment and fundraising all went up.

Anderson will take a year-long sabbatical, during which "he will continue to serve the military, the university and city in different roles," the news release said. He is then eligible to return to his faculty position in the Department of Psychology.
