CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — As a dangerous heat wave continues to take its toll on North Carolina, one local radio station is making sure families in need are able to beat the heat this summer.

WFNC, an AM radio station out of Fayetteville, has partnered with the Fayetteville Urban Ministry to collect fans and make them available for people in need.

"We've just been seeing a lot of people that are in need of fans with their central AC not being effective," Haley Wood of the Fayetteville Urban Ministry said. "They have window units and it just helps that window unit stretch a little further through the house."

The Fan Club started nearly 30 years ago when radio announcers Jeff Thompson and Wendy Riddle wanted to help people on a tight budget beat the summer heat.

"There are folks that are choosing between food and their medicine and running their air condition," said Goldy, the morning personality host for WFNC radio. "I can't even imagine what it's like to have to make that choice very day. Do I feed myself? Do I take my medication? Or, because it's 101, do I run my air conditioner? And those are real choices that folks make."

One of the people this campaign helps is Shinese Galloway, a Fayetteville resident. The fan came in handy for her, because her home still needs a ceiling after being damaged by Hurricane Florence.

"The air is so important because, without it, our utility bills are a little bit too higher than we really want to think about," Galloway said.

Since Memorial Day, the radio station has collected nearly 150 fans. To qualify for a fan, all you need to do is bring your utility bill to the Ubran Ministry's office on Whitfield Street.
