Fayetteville man accused of murder now recovering after being shot by slain man's friends
Fayetteville police were investigating after a a body was found Sunday evening, authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedDerrick Lamont Davis, 44, of Fayetteville, was killed after he was struck with a blunt object during a gathering that took place in the 600 block of Hillsboro Street about 8 p.m. Sunday, police said in a written statement.
Police said Raymond Leon Cogdell, 38, of the 2000 block of Lady Slipper Drive in Fayetteville, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the slaying.
He was listed Monday in serious condition at Cape Fear Valley Hospital after he was shot several times by friends of Davis, police said. Bystanders at the scene chased Cogdell before opening fire on him, police said.
Davis had a physical fight with Cogdell during the gathering but it was not clear what sparked the argument or what it was about.
Davis died at the scene, and Cogdell fled from the area but was confronted on Hillsboro Street by at least two other men, who shot and wounded Cogdell.
Investigators on Monday charged two men in connection with Cogdell's shooting. They have been identified as Sylvester Levone Davis, 48, and Tony Lee Davis, 34, both of Fayetteville, according to police. It was not immediately clear if they were related.
Sylvester Davis was being held Monday on a $250,000 bond at the Cumberland County jail, where he has been charged with felony accessory after the fact, police said.
Police were looking for Tony Davis, who is expected to be charged with felony attempted first-degree murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Police asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to call investigators.
Officers found Davis' body when they arrived at the scene.
Police closed Hillsborough Street while they investigated the incident. It was not immediately clear when the road would reopen.
