FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police issued an alert Thursday for residents in the area of Circle Court, off U.S. Highway 401.

A registered sex offender with a history of mental illness was roaming the area with a BB gun and a knife, police said.

According to family members, Earl Sheldon Sorenson, 40, "considers himself a commando" when he is angry.

Sorenson is described as a white man, about  6 feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He has brown hair, blue eyes and a scar and tattoo on his left arm.

Police asked that residents be on the lookout for Sorenson and call 911 if he is spotted.
