FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A domestic dispute that evolved into a standoff with Fayetteville police on Monday ended after several hours when officers found the man dead inside his home.

The incident began inside a home in the 7100 block of Dayspring Drive about 9:45 a.m. with a call about a domestic dispute at the residence, police said.

"Surprised to be in a quiet, safe neighborhood and something like this could transpire," resident Brent Goad said.

A woman who was inside the home was able to escape, but she was apparently injured when a man inside hit her with a gun, which fired during the incident, a police spokesman told WRAL News. The woman, whose name wasn't released, wasn't shot during the incident, police said.

Police said another woman was inside the home but was able to escape unharmed.

When police arrived, the man inside refused orders to surrender. Police said he was armed.

"We weren’t allowed to turn on the street. We had to stand in the street and more or less watch," Goad said.

"I saw two tanks with the guns on it. I did not know what happened," resident Eboni Adams said.

Investigators said the man was the only one inside the residence, but he had stopped responding to phone calls from police as of 2:45 p.m. Monday.

Police entered the home, but once inside they found him unresponsive, and he was declared dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, police identified the man as Kadeem Brown, 27. Brown lived at the home and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

"He was always very respectful and had a great demeanor about himself," Goad said. "I guess I was really shocked to know that someone like himself that this could transpire, but you know what someone is going through."
