FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The City Council has given final approval to a curbside recycling, which officials said would start next summer.

Recycling will cost homeowners an extra $39 per year, but officials said the program would keep 14 percent of Fayetteville's recyclables out of the city's landfill.

Private contractors and the city will bid for the job.

Fayetteville is the last major city in North Carolina without a curbside recycling program. Residents wishing to recycle have to take their cans, bottles and newspapers to drop-off locations.
