FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville police officer who was facing criminal charges involving a juvenile was found dead in Wilson County on Sunday.

The Fayetteville Police Department received a criminal complaint against Officer Wade Lane Lee Jr., 31, on Friday afternoon. Fayetteville city officials confirmed the person who filed the complaint knew the officer personally.

Officials said the Fayetteville officer was found dead Sunday in the median of Interstate 95 in Wilson County. Officer Lee’s death was caused by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The warrants have been withdrawn since the officer is dead, according to Fayetteville police.

Police originally would not reveal the officer’s identity because it could “revictimize” the person who reported the allegations. The SBI is investigating.
