FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville man faces accusations that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl earlier this week.

The teen told deputies that Carlos Jose Vega came into her bedroom late Sunday or early Monday and inappropriately touched her, investigators with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said.

Vega, 38, of 6255 Pine St., was charged Tuesday with second-degree sexual offense, statutory rape and taking indecent liberties with a child.

According to a state statute, second-degree forcible sexual offense involves sexual acts, which do not include vaginal intercourse, with a person by force and against the will of the other person or with a person who the perpetrator knows is mentally disabled, mentally incapacitated or physically helpless.

Vega was placed in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $75,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was set for Tuesday afternoon.
