FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville man was charged Monday in the death of his wife last week, police said.

James William Strother, 76, was charged with first-degree murder and was being held without bond in the Cumberland County jail.

Officers were called to a home on Tiffany Court early Friday morning and found 72-year-old Edna Strother dead from a gunshot wound to her stomach.

James Strother was taken to a local hospital with other injuries, police said.

The couple had lived in the home for decades, and neighbors said they had heard them argue in the past.
