FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A "first-dose only" vaccine clinic at the Crown Expo Center on Monday is meant to encourage eligible groups to get vaccinated before availability opens to a wider group next week.

Monday's clinic is for health care workers, senior citizens 65 and older and staff and residents of long-term care facilities. No appointments are needed -- eligible patients can arrive at the site at 1960 Coliseum Drive between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to get a vaccine.

Individuals will get the Moderna vaccine on a first-come first-served basis while supplies last.

Drive-thru COVID-19 vaccination clinics at the same site will also be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Appointments can be made online for slots between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and vaccines will available for people without appointments beginning at 3 p.m. if supplies allow.

On Feb. 24, some people who fall under Group 3, which represents non-medical essential workers, will be able to get vaccinated for the first time.

The first round of Group 3 vaccinations will go to teachers, childcare center employees and school support staff, but it is too early for those groups to request appointments on the Cumberland County website, officials said.

“In the coming weeks, more individuals from our community will become eligible for the vaccine,” said Cumberland County Health Department Director Dr. Jennifer Green. “We have added this special clinic as an opportunity for people in Groups 1 and 2 to get their first dose now.”

While the mass clinic has run smoothly, a large turnout means people should be ready to wait inside their cars for hours.

A list of upcoming clinics at the Crown Expo Center:

  • Monday, Feb. 15, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: First dose only of Moderna. No appointments taken.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Second doses only of Moderna and Pfizer (appointments before 3 p.m., walk-ins after)
  • Wednesday, Feb. 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: First dose of Moderna and second doses of Moderna and Pfizer (appointments before 3 p.m., walk-ins after)
  • Friday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: First dose of Moderna and second doses of Moderna and Pfizer (appointments before 3 p.m., walk-ins after)

According to Cumberland County, people who received their first dose at the Crown Expo Center on or after Jan. 27 are automatically scheduled for their second dose and do not need to request an appointment.
