RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — The man arrested in the kidnapping of his 7-month-old daughter from Virginia will remain in North Carolina for the time being.

Carl Kennedy was arrested Tuesday about 36 hours after the initial Amber Alert about his daughter, Emma.

Kennedy appeared in court Wednesday in Randolph County on charges unrelated to the Amber Alert and is being held under $2 million bond on pre-existing charges.

Authorities are waiting on paperwork from Virginia before Kennedy is extradited.

Authorities said Kennedy, who lives in Asheville, kidnapped his daughter from Danville, Va., on Sunday. The pair were found Tuesday in a mobile home in Randolph County. A tip from a caller led to the arrest.

Police issued the Amber Alert early Monday for Emma, who was believed to be in “extreme danger.”

Kristen Murphy, Emma's mom, said she broke off her three-year relationship with Kennedy in March after he was arrested on drug charges.

According to Murphy, Kennedy said he was out of jail and asked to meet her at a gas station on Sunday.

"In hopes of him leaving me alone, I went to go meet him," she said.

Murphy said Kennedy tried to get into her car, hitting her and attempting to stab her, before he took off with the baby.

Once Kennedy is taken back to Virginia, he will face domestic assault and abduction charges.
