RALEIGH, N.C. — A 19-year-old student at UNC was hit by a car driver while jogging through a crosswalk on Gorman Street shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday.
Gorman Street was closed for some time. Raleigh police found Gaston Jarrod Rogers at fault in Nixon's death.

Patrick Luc Nixon was a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, according to his father.

Lester Nixon told WRAL News that his son, a 2019 graduate of Enloe High School in Raleigh, had a 4.0 grade point average and was planning to major in economics and public policy.

Nixon's father, family and countless friends were heartbroken over the loss. His father said he wants everyone to remember how his son lived his life.

"He was an awesome young man," said his father. "He was a kind, sweet, smart young man.

"He saw part of his duty to himself to apply himself to work hard and to stay in shape physically," he said.

According to Nixon's father, he loved to run at Lake Johnson and had gone there yesterday for an eight-mile run after studying all day at home for his finals.

Since gyms were closed due to COVID-19, Nixon had begun running outside.

Nixon's girlfriend of four years was looking forward to college with him, and, of course, the future. Nixon was a double major in public policy and economics. His father said he was very interested in public policy and wanted to one day work for the federal government.
