HENDERSON, N.C. — Vance County authorities are treating a fatal house fire in June as a homicide, Sheriff Peter White said Friday.

Carlton Rudd Jr., 30, died in the June 7 fire at 3100 N.C. Highway 158 Business. Authorities said he was a friend of the family who lived in the home.

A woman and her adult son who were also in the house escaped.

White declined to discuss the cause of the fire but said his deputies and State Bureau of Investigation agents were treating Rudd's death as a homicide.
