Mom of son gunned down in Durham speaks out

Family and friends gathered for a balloon release in memory of Gregory Shaw on the same street where he was shot to death on Thursday.

Shaw's family spoke to WRAL News and said the violence has to stop.

"I lost my child behind nothing," said Nicole Bullock, Shaw's mother.

An anonymous person recorded video of the March 7 shooting, which captured Shaw's final moments. In the video, Shaw is seen punching a man who has been identified by Durham police as Roland Richardson, Jr.

In the video, the two continue to fight until Richardson pulls a gun from the backseat and begins shooting.

Police said Shaw died on the scene.

Richardson, 34, of Durham, surrendered to police Thursday night and was charged with murder in the case. He was being held Sunday without bond in the Durham County jail.

Witnesses say more than a dozen shots were fired.

“It’s just sad that this fight leads to someone taking my son’s life instead of fighting back,” said Shaw's mother. "Shooting him that many times and taking his life for what? I don’t understand it. It’s sad.”

Bullock said she hopes that her son’s death raises awareness about the dangers of gun violence and discourages others from having them. She told WRAL News she is now planning a funeral for her son, whose life was taken too soon.

On Sunday, Richardon’s mother, who did not want to be named, released a statement saying that her son suffered from alcohol addiction and depression. She also said that her son only pulled a gun in self-defense.
