RALEIGH, N.C. — A fatal crash on Thursday afternoon closed all but one lane of Interstate 440 East near North Hills.

The crash occurred around noon close to Exit 7 for Glenwood Avenue in the stretch of I-440 between North Hills and Crabtree Valley Mall.

Raleigh police confirmed that one man died due to crash. Authorities took passenger Adam Alkanshaly to an area hospital, where he died due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alkanshaly was 18.

Police said Yaseen Sulayman Alkhanshali was driving the 2020 Toyota Camry that Alkanshaly was in.

Alkhanshali, 22, is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and speeding. Alkhanshali had serious injuries and is in the hospital.

Police said Alkanshaly and Alkhanshali did not appear to be wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The police investigation showed the Camry driven by Alkhanshali was traveling at a high speed and made several lane changes. Alkhanshali failed to reduce his speed, and collided with the rear of the Mack Granite cement truck, according to the police. Police said the impact caused the Camry to roll over on its right side, and it rolled multiple times.

The driver of the Mack Granite truck was not injured, police said.

WRAL News spoke with a witness named David who said the car was going at least 90 mph before crashing.

"I'm seeing debris coming up over the box van truck that was in front of me, so I knew it was pretty bad," David said. "I kept going left to get in the far left hand lane to get around everybody."

David said he was around the crash by exit 7 near Glenwood Avenue.

“I saw a white car upside down," David said. "I saw a gentleman standing beside it. I can’t tell you if he was the driver or not.”

Sky 5 flew over the crash scene at 12:30 p.m., where the Camry was overturned and numerous emergency crews were at the scene.

The crash occurred along a raised segment of I-440, and police officers were under the bridge, putting up yellow crime scene tape on Yadkin Drive, which is under I-440.

The overturned car was on the side of the I-440, close to the overhang.

There were very heavy delays in the area.

The Raleigh Police Department said traffic was being diverted onto Glenwood Avenue, but advised drivers to avoid the area.

The lanes were blocked for several hours, but reopened around 3 p.m. Thursday.
