ROXBORO, N.C. — Many people in Roxboro are looking for answers after police killed a man Friday.

Roxboro Chief of Police David Hess said 45-year-old David Earl Brooks Jr. was armed when he was shot, and that six minutes elapsed after officers arrived on the scene before shots were fired.

A report by District Attorney Michael Waters said that an autopsy confirmed Brooks was shot once in the chest and died as a result of the injury, despite first aid given by officers and paramedics on the scene.

There is now a roadside memorial on Old Durham Road in his honor.

Hess tweeted that Brooks' family and the district attorney plan to review video of the incident sometime this week.

Although officers in Roxboro do not have body-worn cameras, Hess said that there was some dash cam footage.

Hess was not available for an interview on Monday, and the State Bureau of Investigation, which investigates any time a law enforcement officer fires a weapon, was not ready to share any updates.

Two officers are on administrative duty because of the shooting, which is standard procedure. Hess did not release their names.
