RALEIGH, N.C. — In addition to criminal charges of indecent liberties with a child and statutory sex offense, a Raleigh swim coach is the subject of a civil suit filed by his alleged victim's parents.

The family, who are not identified in the court filing to protect the identity of the minor victim, are suing Nathan Weddle, 43, of 1941 Blackwolf Run Lane in Raleigh, his girlfriend, Shannon Lynn Foster, 44, of 2033 Murrfield Villa in Raleigh and the Capital Area Swim Team for whom both worked. Also named in the suit are USA Swimming, based in Colorado, and Defendant Fitness Connection, a McLean, Va., company.

In the filing, the family claims their daughter quit swimming in December 2017 because of sexual abuse by Weddle. They allege Weddle caused the girl "to believe she was in a dating relationship with him" and that he would leave Foster for her.

The lawsuit details sexual acts and locations and claims Weddle helped the girl "with the fabrication of lies to cover up their improper relationship."

Weddle was arrested in December and charged with sex offenses with a child under the age of 16. He coached the Capital Area Swim Team and a neighborhood swim team, the Hedingham Sharks.

After Weddle's arrest, police said they found texts on his phone from Foster about his relationship with the girl. Foster is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

In their lawsuit, the family alleges that Foster "learned about the inappropriate relationship" between Weddle and the girl "and became enraged."

The family is asking for a jury trial and an award of more than $25,000 to compensate for their daughter's emotional distress.
