JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A Johnston County family is seeking answers after a man and woman were found dead inside a Newton Grove home on Thursday afternoon.

Police found the two victims with fatal gunshots wounds at about 4:30 p.m. when responding to 112 Unity Drive.

Amy Hare told WRAL News that her brother, Matt Jones, 30, was one of the victims, but authorities have not identified the victims.

"He had a family that loved him, and this isn't right," Hare said.

Jones was found dead with a woman who was not his girlfriend, according to family. Jones' mother, Shelia Avery, said her family does not know the woman.

"I just can't believe it. Why would someone do something this crazy?" Avery said.

Avery said her son did not have a perfect past, but he was a loving son, father and brother.

According to criminal records, Jones served time for making and dealing methamphetamine in 2003.

Family members said Jones' 2-year-old son was found in the home with blood on him, but he was not physically harmed.

"He was a great daddy, and now his son is sitting around wanting his daddy," Avery said. "He'd do anything for his son."

According to authorities, the investigation is ongoing.

Jones' family is asking anyone with information to come forward and contact authorities.
