RALEIGH, N.C. — Police in Raleigh are searching for a suspect who shot and killed a woman.

27-year-old Jamila Rogers was shot and killed around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Family members said Rogers was the victim of domestic violence, and the shooting happened during an altercation between several people.

“They stepped up to her and she pushed them back - he told her don’t you ever put your hands on me again," said her aunt. "She was walking off [and] she turned back around and he shot her."

A memorial has been created for Rogers in the 600 block of Bragg Street. The candles spell "LLJ" for “Long Live Jamila”.

“I was devastated. I was there," said her aunt. "I was there to lay with her on the ground hoping that she would survive. She never came back. I was hoping she was coming home.”

She describes her niece as a sweet loving girl, saying Rogers leaves behind a sick mother that needs her.

“God knows what he’s doing, but it’s hard to accept when it’s yours ... your own," said Rogers. "When it comes to domestic violence separate yourself, because it could cost you your life or others.”

WRAL News reached out to Raleigh police to see if anyone has been taken into custody or charged.
