LILLINGTON, N.C. — A nursing home and rehab center in Harnett County has gone from three coronavirus cases to 50 in just two days.

Universal Healthcare in Lillington is now dealing with a serious outbreak that is impacting not only senior citizens but workers and family members, too.

"If my family member contracts this virus it could very well be a death sentence," said a person who did not want to be identified who said they have a loved one inside the nursing home.

"I just fear for her health ... it just breaks my heart," said another person who did not want to be identified who has a sister inside the nursing home. "I wish I could get to her."

Inside the facility, the coronavirus is affecting both employees and residents. Outside, family members are left asking why they weren’t told.
"I learned about this through a WRAL news alert," said the person who has a loved one inside the nursing home. "Universal Healthcare has not contacted me about the danger or the exposure."

They’re not just concerned about their family inside.

"I’m concerned about the health and safety of the workers because if five employees have already been infected, are they sufficiently protecting our healthcare workers?" said the person who has a loved one at the nursing home.

According to Medicare, the facility has 129 beds, meaning that’s at least 35% of their residents testing positive for COVID-19. According to state inspections, the facility has been fined $208,000 since 2017.

The families we talked to say they believe their loved ones are being treated well inside.

"I’ve not heard any complaints at all from my sister," said the person who has a sister at the facility.

But some question the county’s ability.

"Ability to manage this crisis and to take care of these people if they need to be hospitalized," said the person who has a family member at the facility.

Our calls and emails to the county health department were not returned. Loved ones are now holding on with hope and prayers, but with questions.

"Let us know the timeline so that we know if there has been any potential exposures," said the person who has a family member at the facility.

"All families should know the truth about things," said the person who has a sister at the facility.
