— A 7-year-old Clayton boy died Friday after his bicycle crashed with a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon.

Daniel Brito was in critical condition at WakeMed in Raleigh. His parents, Andres and Lucia Brito, decided on Friday to take him off life support, according to the boy's cousin Manuela Navarro.

"She thinks that God needs him, and that's why God took him," Navarro said.

Daniel was riding his bike near the intersection of Powhatan and Glen Laurel roads in Johnston County around 5 p.m. when he tried to turn around and was hit by a truck, troopers said. He was not wearing a helmet.

He had just finished his last day of first grade and was sneaking off to a friend's house around the corner after his parents told him he couldn't go, relatives said.

"About 10 minutes after he asked his daddy, someone came and said that he got hit," Navarro said.

Troopers did not charge the driver, Lester Mir, 38, of Clayton.

Daniel's family said they will always remember the boy as sweet, loving and playful. Along with his parents, he leaves behind two sisters.

"He loved to play with daddy, and he loved to play with the bike," Navarro said.

A funeral service for Daniel will be held at Saint Ann Catholic Church, 4057 U.S. 70 Business West in Clayton, at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

A fund has been set up to help the family pay for funeral expenses. Starting Monday, donations can be made to the "Daniel Jaimes-Brito Memorial Fund" at the Wells Fargo on U.S. Highway 70 in Clayton.
