RALEIGH, N.C. — City officials will formally open the first of two bridges on Falls of Neuse Road over the Neuse River on Oct. 15.

The bridges are part of the two-phase realignment and widening of Falls of Neuse Road near the Wakefield Plantation subdivision. Construction began in June 2010 and was originally scheduled to be complete in December.

The state Department of Transportation plans to close the existing bridge over the river and replace it with another new bridge. The date for that hasn't been set.

The second phase of the project, which involves widening Falls of Neuse Road from south of Raven Ridge Road to Fonville Road, is scheduled to be complete in May 2013.

DeVere Construction Company Inc. is handling the entire $25 million project, which is paid for with money from a 2005 city bond issue and federal funds.
