MATTHEWS, N.C. — A driver was killed Sunday afternoon after a tree fell on a car near Charlotte during a winter storm that dumped snow and rain across much of North Carolina.

An eastbound vehicle was hit by the falling tree on East John Street near the intersection of Charles Buckley Way in Matthews at about 4:15 p.m., police said. The vehicle then went across the lawn of Matthews Church of God, clipped the front of the church, causing minor structural damage, before coming to a stop in the yard of a home next door.

The driver, whose name hasn't been released, died at the scene, and a passenger was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

East John Street was closed in both directions for several hours.
