Falling tree leads to driver's death near Charlotte
A driver was killed Sunday afternoon after a tree fell on a car near Charlotte during a winter storm that dumped snow and rain across much of North Carolina.
Posted — UpdatedAn eastbound vehicle was hit by the falling tree on East John Street near the intersection of Charles Buckley Way in Matthews at about 4:15 p.m., police said. The vehicle then went across the lawn of Matthews Church of God, clipped the front of the church, causing minor structural damage, before coming to a stop in the yard of a home next door.
The driver, whose name hasn't been released, died at the scene, and a passenger was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
East John Street was closed in both directions for several hours.
