<b>CHARLOTTE, N.C.</b> — A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer who died in a crash will have a bridge named in her honor less than a year after she passed away.

The Charlotte City Council <a href="https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/local/bridge-on-i-85-named-for-fallen-cmpd-officer-mia-goodwin-police-north-carolina-charlotte-bridge-wt-harris-i485-female-cop-dies/275-effd11f2-7578-45ed-9d1b-80dd8ff50eae" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unanimously approved a resolution on Monday </a>to name the Interstate 85 bridge that intersects with W.T. Harris Blvd the Mia Goodwin Memorial Bridge.

Dozens of CMPD officers attended the council meeting to show their appreciation for Goodwin.

<p>profession to have to juggle um, this profession, she's a third shift officer. Imagine Trying to be a mother to three kids husband who was a firefighter who's jobs and hours are just as demanding. Um, and to have to be the best mom that she can and the best husband that she can. That's this profession is one that's not for everyone. But I do know that she knew it was for her and I know that she wanted to continue and make this a career and not just a job. So uh, you know, I have to give praise to any officers, any of our people, any employee that endures the challenges that we have to endure every single day. We put on this uniform and we know that there's no guarantees that we're coming home to our families and in that is the most difficult. Can you tell us? Hey chief, can you tell us? No. Yeah. Yes. Well I, I can tell you there was a procession that from the scene of the accident and that led to the, I'm sorry there was a procession that we had earlier that took um Officer Goodwin to the medical examiner's office. Uh, as far as processions that are leading, we're still working on some of that and some of the details, but we will certainly put out what we can as far as to let the public know because I know there's gonna be a great deal of support to honor her life and to celebrate her life. Chief officers were on scene this morning doing prepare for this. There, there's, there's no way to prepare. You can you can talk about it. You can plan for it. You can have operation plans on what we're going to do if it does happen, but until it does, it's it's something that you just really can't put your arms around. Uh the officers, I can tell you uh uh are distraught over what's happened there, emotional over what happened. But what I also can tell you is that I thank God that that the officers that did survive are alive today. If you see the aftermath of the collision and what happened, we are fortunate that we're not talking about more officers that succumbed to injuries, but I was able to speak with each of them this morning. Uh and they're doing as well as can be expected. Just to clarify, You said two other officers were injured, but they have since there were three other officers injured that have been released atrium. So the collision it happened. They were the officers were in the roadway. Uh, We had one that was no at least one was in his vehicle. Ah We still are looking at the investigation as far as where the other ones were. But if you look at the the wreckage and how how extended that was. So, any officer that was on the scene pretty much was in the path of of this collision and we were very fortunate that we did have officers that survived this collision. Right? I'm sorry, were they entered? Yes. So 11 of the tractor trailer drivers was transported to hospital. That driver is still in the hospital. As of this press con That's still too early. That's something we're definitely looking at. Where we still need to conduct interviews. We still need to do the accident reconstruction once we can get to a point to where we can determine whether charges are appropriate or not. Well, certainly will certainly face that. When we get to, we talked about, you know, I can, I can tell you what I know. Uh, and I didn't personally know her. But what I can tell you from my conversations is that she was an inspiring young woman who wanted to do more. She was someone who uh, felt like she had a lot to offer in this profession resilient. Uh, and she loved the people around her, the people that she worked with. So I know that her and her husband or loving or loving people ah, and that they both had future plans and aspirations of their future. And it's one of these situations where we recognize now that um, life is not guaranteed and life is short and we have to embrace it over here. The, that had heavily weird what's that exact exit or entry. Yeah. All the cruisers were on I-85. Uh, and there were actually four that were receive some extensive damage over a law. You know, we we've been talking through this all morning, we've been looking at the what ifs what could we have done to improve the safety of the officers and um watching the video of the crash, watching the aftermath of the crash. I don't have answers. I don't have answers to say that if we put these safety precautions in place, this wouldn't have. The only way this doesn't happen is if people recognize that there are blue lights in the roadway, slow down and take extra precaution. And when you don't do that, put the lives of men and women who are there to serve and protect in danger. And I think that's what we're, what we're looking at today. Officer Goodwin and the other three officers that were involved are heroes. They're out there too, protect and serve and do their job and unfortunately ah the outcome that we see today as a result of of, I'll just leave it at that. Right. Thanks. We we were there to assist highway Patrol who was taking Highway Patrol is responsible for the accidents that occur on the interstates to taking those reports. However, ah cmp Di does have the resources to assist and also take those reports when Highway Patrol is not available. But what I can tell you is that they were on the scene when this happen while This is, I've been doing this for 30 years. This is the first traffic accident that involved a fatality of one of our officers since I've been here, I believe in. I'm not um definite on this, but as we look back, We believe the last time this has happened has been in 1980s. Somewhere in the 80's C. M. P. D. Or a major crash unit will be the lead investigating agencies. Do you know she sure? I'm not sure I was told that she was the last officer to arrive on the scene. So she hadn't been out there long and but the officers had been out, we've been on that location since 10 30 the night before. I'll take one more question. You know the answer to that is just yes, every in every way possible. And it's not just see MPD it's the city of charlotte, it's the community and it's the state of north Carolina. It's the profession as a whole. I can't tell you how many phone calls and um text messages and emails of letters of support uh that I have received spoke with the governor this morning and was able to have a conversation with him as well. So I'll tell you when we are facing difficult times. I see a lot of people step up and I'm seeing that this morning. So thank you. Thank you all for being here, mm. Mhm. 'There's no way to prepare': CMPD mourns death of officer, a mother of 3

Each council member took the time to address the officers and thank them for their work.

Goodwin died on Dec. 22, 2021, when she and three fellow officers were struck by a truck on Interstate 85.

Goodwin is the first female CMPD officer to be killed in the line of duty.

A funeral and procession were held Wednesday for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Officer Mia Goodwin, who was killed in the line of duty days before Christmas.

The officer had just returned from maternity leave days before the fatal crash after giving birth to her third child. Goodwin additionally had two other children with her husband who she is survived by.

Goodwin worked for the department for six years and is deeply missed by those she worked around.
